Five reasons to upgrade to the Tamron 28-75 mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2

To this day, the Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III RXD is Tamron's best-selling and best-loved lens for the Sony E-Mount. This universal zoom lens has won many awards and is known for its fantastic image quality and fast autofocus in a compact and affordable package. Little room for improvement you might think, but nothing could be further from the truth. Tamron has released a second generation of this lens: the Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2!

Better image quality than the Award-winning Tamron A036

The previous Tamron 28-75mm zoom (Model A036) was introduced in 2018 and awarded the EISA Award for its compact size, high resolution and beautiful bokeh. So it was not easy to improve upon the optical performance of the 1st-generation. Tamron however, redesigned the optical system of the 28-75mm F2.8 G2 from the ground up and improved on these points:

  • Higher resolution with much more details in every zoom position
  • Sharpness through to the edges of the image
  • Higher contrast even in backlit situations
  • Less chromatic aberration
  • An even nicer bokeh

Twice as fast autofocus with VXD motor

The first generation Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 zoom has the much praised fast and silent RXD AF motor. To get the fastest focus speeds on the Tamron 70-180mm F/2.8 tele zoom, Tamron had to invent a more powerful AF motor. This VXD linear motor focus mechanism is about 2x faster and also more accurate than the RXD focus motor. The Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2 A063 with the VXD AF motor makes it possible to get razor-sharp images of moving subjects and impressive Eye-AF, with incredible speed.  You can clearly see the difference on the comparison video below.

Makes amazing wide-angle close-up shots

We all know the typical look of a telephoto macro shot. The subject big in full view and a completely blurred and an unrecognizable background. With the  Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2 A063 you can take a strong close-up shot at only 0.18 m in the WIDE position. This give you a powerful 1:2.7, almost half live size, magnification with a perspective unique to wide-angle lenses. The subject will be large, while keeping a wide view of the background in frame. This is ideal to show an insect, plant or other subjectwhile still seeing a bit of the surroundings.

Exciting new and durable lens design

The Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 G2 features a fresh, new design. Certain internal parts of the zoom ring and focus ring have been enhanced, resulting in a smoother overall feel. The diameter of the lens barrel has been slimmed down to give the lens a contoured profile that makes it easier to grip. This creates a comfortable shape that fits snugly and naturally in the hand. The surface of the lens exterior is now abrasion resistant, which makes the lens barrel harder to scratch and more resistant to fingerprints.
