H&Y RevoRing: one step-up ring for multiple filter sizes

Do you work with multiple step-up rings to use one size filter on different lenses? Then you know how inconvenient it is to change rings every time. The H&Y RevoRing offers the solution with an adapter with adjustable filter size so you can quickly use one filter on multiple lenses.

This article is about the H&Y RevoRing. This is an adjustable step-up ring that allows one filter to fit multiple sizes of lenses, so you only need one step-up ring. Opt for a RevoRing Variable Filter Adapter on which you can screw your own filters, for a RevoRing MKII with VND+CPL filter or a RevoRing with a Black or White Mist filter. The filter is large enough to cover the entire field of view of your lens, so you won't suffer from vignetting. Optionally, you can further expand H&Y RevoRing by combining it with magnetic Clip-On filters.

What is a RevoRing?

The H&Y RevoRing is an adjustable filter size adapter with a patented mechanism. The metal blades in the ring (similar to an aperture) clamp securely onto the inside of the lens thread. One RevoRing covers multiple filter sizes, such as 46-62 mm or 67-82 mm, eliminating the need for separate step-up rings.

You use one RevoRing on multiple lenses, without changing rings or filters each time. The front of the adapter is threaded or has a built-in filter, depending on the five variants. This allows you to save costs and work more quickly and efficiently.

What variants are there?

H&Y RevoRing Variable Filter Adapter (without filter)

You use this version with your own screw filters. Therefore, the adapter is interesting for those who have already invested in high-quality ND or CPL filters in a large size, such as the popular PolarPro Black Mist, for example. Those filters are usable by screwing them onto the RevoRing adapter. The front-mounted thread is compatible with all brands of screw-on filters, but does not offer a magnetic clip-on feature.

The RevoRing is available in several sizes, each supporting a range of filter sizes. Choose the size that covers most of your filter collection/filter size.

  • 37–49mm → uses 52mm filters
  • 46–62mm → uses 67mm filters
  • 52–72mm → uses 77mm filters
  • 67–82mm → uses 82mm filters
  • 82–95mm → uses 95mm filters

2. H&Y RevoRing MKII with built-in VND3-1000+CPL Filter

This version combines an ND3-1000 with a CPL in one filter. The VND filter lets you infinitely control light from 1.5 to 10 stops. The CPL removes reflections and enhances colors. The VND and CPL are easily and quickly adjustable via separate rings. So you no longer need to carry separate filters. The built-in filters are high quality, like all filters from H&Y. If you want to use other filters, you can click the separately available magnetic H&Y RevoRing Clip-On filters directly onto this filter.

Differences between the RevoRing VND MKI vs. MKII

The RevoRing with built-in filter recently received an update. The improvements in the new version are as follows:

  • Locking screws for VND, CPL and threaded ring.
  • You can now lock the filters and ring so they don't accidentally twist during use.
  • Hard stops on the filters
  • The VND and CPL now have clear end points. So you never turn too far or past the desired range.
  • Compatible with H&Y RevoSwift
  • You can use round magnetic filters or easily attach the RevoSwift 100mm magnetic filter holder, for quick changes of GND or ND filters.
  • Better grip and strength
  • The updated design makes the ring more stable and reliable for heavier filters or accessories.

Tip: By locking the VND and CPOL with the dials, it is easier to open the RevoRing filter size sheets and place the RevoRing MKII on your lens.

3. RevoRing with built-in MRC CPL filter

This RevoRing has an integrated circular polarizing filter (CPL) that reduces reflections and intensifies colors. Thanks to the rotary knob on the side, you can adjust the filter easily and precisely. It is compatible with the magnetic RevoRing Clip-On filters.

4. RevoRing Black Mist Promise / White Mist

In addition to the RevoRing adapter and the VND+CPL filter, RevoRing Black Mist and White Mist filters are also available. These variants are ideal if you use that effect as standard in your workflow. The Black Mist in particular is popular with videographers for a softer, cinematic look. The built-in magnetic ring allows you to easily snap on additional H&Y magnetic ND filters from the Clip-On system.

  • Black Mist (1/2 , 1/4 en 1/8)
Softens highlights and reduces the digital “sharp” look of modern cameras. Commonly used in video production or portrait photography for a subtle, diffused effect.
  • White Mist (1/2, 1/4 en 1/8)
  • Gives a light, dreamy glow to your image without losing too much contrast or sharpness. Popular for creative portrait photography or lifestyle shoots where atmosphere and softness are key. It is also a very effective filter when photographing a starry sky.

How do I know which step-up ring I need?

Normally first look at the filter size of your lens, for example Ø67mm. If you have a 77mm filter then you use a step-up ring from 67mm to 77mm to make the filter fit. With the H&Y RevoRing, this is no longer necessary. You simply choose the variant that covers most of your lens collection - for example, 67-82mm. One RevoRing thus replaces up to five traditional step-up rings. The 77mm filter of your lens now also fits the lens with 67mm filter size. Very convenient.

What is the difference between a step-up ring and a step-down ring?

A step-up ring makes a larger filter fit a smaller lens. A step-down ring does the opposite: it lets you use a smaller filter on a larger lens. The disadvantage of a step-down ring is that you usually suffer from vignetting (dark corners in the image). With a step-up ring, you don't have that problem because the filter is larger than the lens.

Will I get vignetting if I use the RevoRing?

No, as long as you use a RevoRing with a filter diameter larger than that of your lens, vignetting will not occur. The adapter is designed so that the filter is large enough to cover the entire field of view of your lens.

"I have not noticed any vignetting during my use of the system, although some users have indicated that it can occur at focal lengths of 16 mm and larger. A wide-angle lens adapter or bridge adapter can remove vignetting in-camera, although dark corners are easy to correct in post-processing anyway."

Sample filter setup from landscape photographer

Two lenses that cover the commonly used range for landscape photography are the 16-35mm f/4 and the 28-200mm f/2.8. From expansive vistas to intimate compositions, you can go in any direction with these. In landscape photography, a good filter set makes a lot of difference. With the H&Y RevoRing, you work more efficiently with filters when changing between these two lenses a lot in the field.

Sample filter kit:

  • H&Y RevoRing MKII 67-82mm with built-in CPL + VND (1.5-10 stops)

This RevoRing fits virtually all popular wide-angle and standard zooms with a filter thread between 67mm and 82mm. The built-in circular polarizer filter reduces reflections and enhances contrast and color saturation. This is ideal for water, leaves or clear skies. The variable ND filter slows shutter speed by up to 10 stops, perfect for creative effects such as moving clouds or flowing water.

  • H&Y RevoSwift Bridge Ring and the 100mm filter holder with soft GND filter

For high-contrast scenes such as a bright sky over a dark landscape, a soft graduated ND filter provides a balanced exposure. The magnetic RevoSwift system lets you position the filter quickly and accurately, even when the light changes quickly around sunrise or sunset.

These four filter accessories are all included in the H&Y RevoRing MKII Landscape kit. You'll eventually attach the RevoRing to your lens and click these accessories all together.

Sample filter setup for videographers

If you work with the two favorite lenses among videographers: the 35mm f/1.4 and the 85mm f/1.8 then it's convenient if you can quickly change your filter from one lens to the other without having to screw your filter on. You choose the 35mm for general scenes and hand-held work, the 85mm for close-ups with cinematic background blur. The H&Y RevoRing lets you smoothly tune to different situations and lighting conditions.

Sample filter kit:

  • H&Y RevoRing MKII 52-72mm with built-in VND + CPL

While filming, you almost never adjust your shutter speed and ISO. For natural motion blur, choose a shutter speed that is about double your frame rate - at 25 fps, that's 1/50s. ISO is usually kept at your camera's base ISO (often 800) for best dynamic range and minimal noise, especially in LOG shots. If you do want to shoot with an open aperture (such as f/1.4) in daylight, then a variable ND filter is essential. The built-in VND of this RevoRing offers infinite control over 1.5 to 10 stops of light reduction, so you can always work with the settings you want. The CPL helps reduce reflections and subtly saturates colors.

  • H&Y Magnetic Black Mist Clip-On Filter (1/4 or 1/8)

For a soft, cinematic look, add a Black Mist filter. It softens highlights, takes the sharp digital edges off your shots. In addition, it adds a subtle glow effect to light sources which is perfect for portraits or evening scenes.

  • H&Y RevoSwift Bridge Ring + Magnetic Matte Box

Are you working with multiple light sources or want to avoid unwanted lens flares? Then attach the RevoSwift Matte Box or Lens Hood magnetically to your RevoRing.

The H&Y RevoRing MKII VND+CPL, the RevoSwift Bridge Ring and the magnetic Matte Box all come together in the H&Y RevoRing MKII Video Kit. That also includes a convector in case you want to fix the CPL effect. The Black Mist Clip-on filter is available separately. You click them together in this order:

Short summary

The H&Y RevoRing is a smart solution for anyone who wants to work efficiently with filters. You no longer have choice stress about which filter size to carry. And with the choice of variable RevoRing without or with built-in filter, it adapts to your style. Add to that the option of using magnetic filters, and you have a modular filter system that grows with you.
