Travel-proof and indestructible - my experience with the Lexar ARMOR 700 Portable SSD

Anyone who travels often, especially in harsh conditions, knows one thing: a reliable SSD is worth its weight in gold. A Portable SSD that is secure, fast and resistant to dust. For me, that's the Lexar ARMOR 700 Portable SSD, which now accompanies me on all my travels. Like during our multi-week tour of Namibia and South Africa, where we only had a rooftop tent on the car and a lot of camera equipment with us. And that Lexar Portable SSD? It held up well despite our many oopsies.

Kristof is a German photographer and content creator. His work often takes him to the farthest corners of the world and he likes to experiment with creative equipment. Whether he is trekking through the Alps in the morning or shooting in the city at night, he regularly tests new equipment and shares his experiences.

Why choose the Lexar ARMOR 700 Portable SSD?

My work takes place not only between laptop and camera, but mostly outdoors - in the dust of the Kalahari, the Amazon rainforest or during storms at Cape Horn. Therefore, my equipment must be able to withstand harsh conditions. And that is exactly where the Lexar ARMOR 700 SSD excels.

I use the Lexar ARMOR 700 with 1 TB as a fast backup option and with 4 TB for larger projects, processing large amounts of RAW files and video material on a daily basis. What convinced me most was the high transfer speed of up to 2000 MB/s via USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 - not just a nice number on paper, but a real time saver in practice.

"The Lexar ARMOR 700 has saved me in these situations many times."

Especially in situations where speed is of the essence - for example, when it gets dark, flies are approaching the lit laptop screen or when we need to move on quickly. Then it is reassuring to know that your data is not only safely backed up, but also at lightning speed. The Lexar ARMOR 700 has saved me in this situations many times - in the middle of the bush or just before leaving for the next destination.

Robustness that can handle adventures

The IP66 certification was not a luxury for me, but a decisive reason for choosing this SSD. Dust, water, falling - it is part of my daily life. In South Africa, I accidentally dropped the SSD from almost a metre high on rocky ground. Result? Not a scratch, no data loss - practice test passed gloriously!

Later that evening, it even lay in the sand next to our camping cooker, where everything got dusty and greasy. But even then, I could easily rinse it under the tap the next day without any problems. With an ordinary SSD, that would probably leave you with only a paperweight.

The rubber casing sits firmly in the hand, feels premium and is clearly designed for intensive outdoor use. Ideal, because I don't want to have to treat my equipment like a raw egg - and with this SSD, I don't have to.

Compatible with (almost) everything

A big advantage of the Lexar ARMOR 700 is its wide compatibility. I use it not only with my laptop, iPad and Android devices, but also with my iPhone 15 Pro, which can record 4K ProRes videos directly to the SSD.
This is ideal for spontaneous productions on the go: no more worries about internal storage limits and immediately ready for editing.

Whether I'm working from my mobile office, filming from the car or selecting footage in the tent at night, the Lexar ARMOR 700 works reliably, quickly and without a hitch. Just what you want when you're travelling.

Conclusion: small, fast, indestructible - and always with you

Wherever I am - in the mountains, the desert or at the North Pole - I need to be able to rely on my equipment. For me, the Lexar ARMOR 700 is not just another SSD, but a reliable travel companion that can handle anything. Whether it's 1 TB for quick backups or 4 TB for big projects, it uncompromisingly does what it needs to do.

For anyone who travels a lot, handles large amounts of data and doesn't want to have to be careful with their devices: the Lexar ARMOR 700 is well worth every penny as far as I'm concerned.
