Why the Zhiyun Crane 4 is the ideal gimbal for videographers
In the world of videography, the importance of a stabilised shot cannot be underestimated. Gimbals are now available in all shapes, sizes and price ranges. Zhiyun is a renowned manufacturer in the field of gimbals. The Crane 4 is one of their most impressive gimbals that I love to use. Here's why.
About Sasan Amir
Sasan Amir is a professional photographer and filmmaker who has dedicated his life to connecting the beauty of our wild world with us humans. He also works a lot in the studio, where he lets his creativity run wild with RGB lights and complex set-ups.
What is a gimbal?
A gimbal is a stabilisation system used when filming. It is a compact device that is held in the hand during filming and can compensate or control movements.

How is the Zhiyun Crane 4 constructed?
The Crane 4 is made of a robust aluminium alloy that is highly wear-resistant. The handle and grip are surrounded by a textured rubber that is very slip-resistant, making the gimbal super stable in the hand. The adjustable axes can be easily slid together for space-saving storage of the gimbal. Each axis of the device is equipped with indicator lights that light up green to show the user that the camera is level.
When these lights illuminate red, they indicate that further adjustments are needed. The built-in display is a 1.22-inch touchscreen, which offers standard functions such as choosing between modes: Pan, Follow, POV, as well as other functions such as motion timelapse.

Which accessories are included?
The quick-release plate on the gimbal is particularly handy as it allows you to quickly switch between horizontal and vertical viewing. Although it requires rebalancing, Zhiyun has a very good solution for this. This is especially handy in this day and age when platforms like Instagram and TikTok are already standard for many.
Adjustable Slingshot
The adjustable Slingshot handle and wrist rest, which are part of the accessories, are a huge help. With this combination, the angle can be adjusted more precisely, allowing you to film more accurately. In general, endurance when filming is greater because the wrist is relieved and you don't get tired as quickly. Experienced videographers themselves know how heavy video production can strain the wrists.
The Slingshot's handle can be adjusted on the gimbal's main axis, making it relatively easy to switch to two-handed mode. The 1/4-inch thread on the handle also allows additional lights and accessories to be attached.
Integrated light
The integrated 10-watt LED lamp is also remarkable. This lamp is equipped with practical dimming and colour temperature control. In addition, a small softbox is included to soften the light. The light is controlled via a wheel next to the on/off button and can be set from 2600 to 5400 Kelvin. This versatile two-colour light is ideal for various applications, especially in event videography and for quick run-and-gun shots. The trigger button and front dial allow you to adjust the ISO, shutter speed and aperture as required. It is also possible to control the focus motor.

Connectivity of the Zhiyun Crane 4
The Crane 4 also scores highly in terms of connectivity. The gimbal has a total of three USB-C ports on its axis. One of these ports is used to connect the camera directly to the gimbal. The remaining ports are used to connect additional devices, such as a motorised zoom or a follow focus device. Users need to check for themselves whether the connection works via Bluetooth or cable, with Sony cameras it is recommended to use a cable connection for best functionality.

Zhiyun's website has a list of cameras that are compatible with which functions. Once the camera is connected to the gimbal, it can be operated seamlessly. Users can control functions such as exposure control and starting and stopping recording directly via the gimbal.
Battery life
The USB-C connector on the bottom of the base lets you charge the gimbal and perform any firmware updates. The PD quick charge function allows for quick charging of the gimbal, which is equipped with four built-in 18650 batteries. With a charging time of 1 hour and 50 minutes, the battery lasts up to 12 hours, which is absolutely more than enough for 99% of cases and thus allows for longer shoots without any problems. When the going gets tough, a power bank can help, as the Crane 4 can also be used while charging.

Who is the Crane 4 suitable for?
The Zhiyun Crane 4 is a gimbal designed for professional use. Videographers and filmmakers benefit from the innovations Zhiyun has made compared to the Crane 3. The Crane 4 is ideal for demanding shooting situations and its application range is also very diverse. But above all, it scores points in dark environments, as the Crane 4 has a huge advantage thanks to its integrated LED light.
